Make Yourself Heard: Assertive Communication Skills for Neurodivergent Parents
Getting what you need from other people — a partner, a school, an employer, a family member — requires being able to communicate assertively. For neurodivergent people, this can be harder than it sounds. Rejection sensitivity, differences in processing speed or verbal fluency, difficulty reading social cues, alexithymia, past experiences of not being believed or taken seriously: all of these can make asking for things feel daunting or simply not worth the risk.
But as a neurodivergent parent, assertive communication often matters more, not less. Advocating for your child, navigating conversations at work, managing relationships with people who don't always understand — these require a toolkit.
This guide explains the common traps that get in the way, and walks you through a four-step assertive communication process you can adapt and use in real situations.
